‘Basket Claw’. Annual. Zones 2-11. Full sun. Drought tolerant. Native to Southwestern US. Plants grow to 1 or 2 feet tall and sprawl up to 4ft. Small tropical-looking flowers are followed by strange fruits with curved tails mature into decorative black seed pods which split open to appear like two long ‘devil’s claws’. The dried seed pods are soaked and pulled apart to create fibres traditionally used as a black-coloured basket weaving material by indigenous groups of the Southwest US and northern Mexico.
